Other Characters Played: None. I'm a newbie!
Character: Asuna Yuuki
Series: Sword Art Online
Age: 17
History: This is Asuna's page on the SAO wiki.
Canon Point: During episode 7. She has been on the front lines and is the Vice Commander of the Knights of the Blood Oath. Or was. I figure while she was out adventuring off screen (SAO has numerous tiny time skips, so this would be doable), she got knocked off a cliff and rescued by a dragon.
Personality: Asuna is a very determined young woman. She is essentially a normal Japanese girl who ended up in the middle of a kill-or-be-killed virtual reality game that wasn't so virtual. She managed, after a period of initial freaking out, to decide that she wanted to survive and apply herself to this utterly. This demonstrates this essential core of who Asuna is: she has an inner resolve and hardness that is hard to crack, that can self-motivate her, and can unfortunately make her rather stubborn.
However, this mono-focused nature doesn't make Asuna a vicious or cruel person. She became focused on survival and expressed that determination because of circumstances, which coming to Midgard will still prompt. At heart, though, she is a kind and considerate person, who really wants the best for everyone. She tries to be helpful, but the combination of her stubbornness and pride mean that Asuna can be bossy or even unreasonable.
Most of the time, though, Asuna is a good person to just hang out with. She is cheerful and chatty; she doesn't like to keep herself apart from her allies and she needs time to relax sometimes. She might be hard working, but she likes to cook a good meal, chat with someone, and the like. She may hide this sometimes, to keep up her determined tough girl act.
Asuna is quite proud of herself. That determination and self-certainty gives her an ego; she knows she is good at what she does and she knows that. She is one of the best in her world. She lets this go to her head. She can talk down to people sometimes and she can get even more stubborn when she thinks someone isn't listening to her clearly superior knowledge, then overreact, by challenging them and getting aggressive. Asuna can also have her pride insulted, which makes her prickly.
She is a fairly aggressive person. Sometimes, this is good; it's how she rose to the top, plays into her determination, and is how she protects people. However, she can pick fights when she feels affronted. It also means her emotions can get the best of her. She will act hotheaded or snappy when she gets offended. She might even physically lash out, if she gets really angry.
Basically, for all that Asuna acts like the cool, calm, and confident commander, she is a total hothead. She thinks with her heart; it drives why she tries to help and protect people, it drives how she gets offended and angry, and it makes her vulnerable to getting hurt.
Skills and Abilities: Asuna was plucked out of an virtual reality based MMORPG (which is where 99% of her series takes place) and has, essentially, magical video game fencer powers. She is a very fast, agile, and nimble fighter. She uses a rapier and can do some very impressive very fast stabs, that cause energy bursts to shoot out when she does so. Asuna is a very strong combatant from her world, but the power level is generally not ridiculous and she would be on par, combat-wise, with most people.
Asuna does have crazy good domestic skills. In the game, she can cook super well. Given that she talks about how to cook in some detail in the show, she probably knows how to cook for real.
Also, Asuna was plucked out of SAO -- this is the canon basis for her and really what's more "real" for her -- so she was in a super-real virtual environment. She experienced this as mostly real with an interface that helped interact with some details. This all changed after the dragon pulled her in; I figure this may be a source of doubt, but she's certainly not going to pull up menus and other such weird things to access items.
First Person Sample: [Done as a text post to the runic network.]
Good afternoon, everyone!
These devices they gave us are fascinating. I honestly thought this was a game at first, which I swear I don't mean in an insulting way. I'm not sure what to think of finding out it's not, but I guess I don't have much choice but to get used to it for now.
I'm not sure what to think about knowing that I'm saved. I was already away from my world. Um, sort of, at any rate. Getting back seems harder.
But... the creature that handed this to me is really cute.
Third Person Sample: "Everyone, pay attention!" Asuna said, standing before the table. She looked at the others gathered around it. This part came easy to her: a table surrounded by comrades, a map demonstrating a battle plan, and a plan to explain to bring down a floor boss. It wasn't entirely natural, but she learned that charisma and command were a skill, just like cooking and swordplay. Practice made perfect.
Now, when Asuna spoke, people looked. And, she realized, she had changed, too. She no longer felt like she was faking it, like she was pretending to be the sort of person people looked to. It made her want to smile brightly, to remind herself that she was good at this stunt, but Asuna stopped that impulse. It did not match the look she cultivated.
"We'll use three teams. I'll lead the first team, here," she said, with a finger jab, "and the second and third teams will move in against the floor boss on the flanks." She did two more jabs of her finger. "After we engage, they're going to come around from the sides to surround them. But, I want them ready to break off if he summons in assistance--"
She looked up, at one of the men, who started to nod off. "Hey! Are you paying attention? This is serious!"
